An Indian family recipe · India to London

Three
generations.
One cup.

Mira's grandmother blended it by eye. Her mother by memory. Mira wrote it all down — an authentic chai spice blend of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove and pepper, sweetened with coconut sugar. Caffeine-free, so it's always chai time.

Every family has variations on the recipe — this is how you meet ours. Golden brings turmeric's earthy warmth; Gingerbread is winter in a pan. Mix any two.

Mira with a cup of chai

From India to your cup

Chai by Mira didn't start as a brand. It started as the smell of a kitchen — Mira, her mother and her grandmother around one pan, blending spice by instinct.

"My grandmother never measured anything. She knew by the colour, the smell, the way it moved in the pan."

There is no single authentic chai — it changes from home to home, and that's the point. This one is ours. Today it's on the boil in more than 300 cafés across the UK.

How to make proper chai

"When I have chai, it's like a big, deep sigh." — Mira. Here's the three-minute route to yours.

All recipes →
01

Warm

Your milk of choice — 1 mug or 8oz — in a pan, on a low heat. Dairy, oat, coconut — all welcome. No rush; chai has never once been in a hurry.

02

Whisk

A heaped tablespoon of the blend, stirred or whisked in. Let it boil and smell the sweet spices waking up.

03

Pour

Now pour into your favourite mug. Stronger, sweeter, over ice — make it yours. There's no right way. That's the point.

Iced chai, chai porridge, chai cake — every experiment starts with the same pouch.

Where the brand began

The Book of Chai

"A moment to stop, to inhale… to breathe and sigh" — that's how Mira describes chai in the book, between colonial history, journeys across India and her grandmother's childhood stories from a village in Gujarat. Published by Headline. Read it with a cup. Mira Manek is founder of Chai by Mira, health and wellness expert, former journalist and author of three books. Her latest book is The Book of Chai.

Good questions

Is it really caffeine-free?

Completely. Chai just means tea — but our blend is pure spice, no tea leaves. Break of dawn, 4pm slump, last thing at night: in Mira's family, chai was always on the boil, and now yours can be too.

What's actually in it?

Six spices — cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, clove and black pepper — and coconut sugar. That's the whole list. Vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free.

How is this different from chai syrup?

Syrup is sugar doing an impression of spice. This is the real thing — whole spices, ground and blended the way Mira's grandmother made it. You won't go back.

Where can I try it first?

In hundreds of cafés and members' clubs across the UK and USA — Soho House, the National Gallery, Mildreds, Foyles and more. Or start with the 2×150g bundle.
